Saturnus
Richter, Gladsaxe - 2023

Good old Saturnus was headlining this gloomy, doom-filled night in lonesome October at Richter in Gladsaxe. We’ve seen Saturnus quite a few times over the years, and this night they just so happened to be the only band we’d ever seen before, so right off the bat, we figured we were in for a good time.
“Now it’s time to shut up and play!”
- Thomas Akim Grønbæk Jensen (vocals)
Yeah, there was no doubt Saturnus was the big reason for us to go to Gladsaxe this evening. Lunah especially has a long history with the band, but we both enjoy them whenever we have the chance.
As I came to understand it, this was a co-headlining tour with In The Woods…, but it wasn’t surprising that Saturnus got the main gig on this, their only Danish show. And as suspected, the crowd had grown quite a bit compared to the earlier two bands. What did surprise me however, was that even though the crowd had grown in size, it still can’t have been more than something around half-filled in the not too big venue. A true shame if you ask me, because this was a great night from start to finish. I definitely thought these bands would have a bigger pull, but there we are.
The show opened with the sound of rain, leading into the title- and opening track of their latest album, The Storm Within. A strong opening, and a great track, and we were off to a good start. The band members seemed to enjoy themselves, and Jensen looked happy to be here. He spoke quite a bit between songs, but it was mostly nonsense about football and the like, not exactly a subject close to my heart, and nothing really worth noting here.
The music was on point though, and especially the two guitarists headbanged heartily and went all in on the performance side of things. I was standing closer to Julio Fernandez, and he had a great connection going with the crowd around him. At several points during the show, he could be seen giving knuckles or handing out plectres to the people in front of him.
“Let’s take the tempo down a bit, I’m losing my breath here.”
- Jensen (vocals)
Sadly, it wasn’t completely to last though. While the music stayed on top of things, and all three string benders rocked out well, we had a drummer in Henrik Glass who was a bit too anonymous for his own and the concert’s good, and while Jensen might have been joking in the above comment, it was clear to see that his energy was leaving him.
Luckily for Saturnus, keyboardist Mika Filborne loosened up more by the song, and towards the end, his performance was among the best of the band’s.
Saturnus delivered a good show overall, but it wasn’t great. If they were affected by people dropping out during the show is not for me to say - it could just as easily have been the other way around.
There were enough good things here to stick around for, but we have definitely seen Saturnus better in the past, even in the recent past with this group of musicians.
