Gorgoroth

Brutal Assault - 2010

There has been some controversy about the ownership of the name Gorgoroth.
Hence the two first reviews on our site is of the short-lived Gaahl / King Ov Hell version of the band, but as the name has now returned to the sole ownership of guitarist Infernus, it was his band that was present here at Brutal Assault and ready to lead the way for Satan…

Infernus had assembled a completely new outfit around him, consisting of both old and new Gorgoroth members; Pest and Tormentor rejoined the ranks respectively as vocalist and guitarist, and Frank ‘Bøddel’ Watkins (ex-Obituary) was new on bass as well as Tomas ‘Alzazmon’ Asklund (ex-Dissection) on drums. As Tormentor and Alzazmon were unable to go touring with the band, Infernus had pulled in Skyggen (guitar) and Vyl (drums) as session live musicians instead however. Not that this made a whole lot of difference for me though, as I hardly know any of them, but I still wanted to see the show just to see the difference, if any, between the two versions of the band.

As a first apparent difference, this line up of the band had no special stage decorations whatsoever, in comparison to the others who had had plenty, and therefore relied solely on their own performance skills to make a great show. This was where it all started going wrong…
As I wrote in my note-pad (and this was more or less all I could get on paper), I simply don’t know what to say.
The show was non-existent, the sound was bad and the musicians worse, and although (you may have gathered as much from the earlier reviews) I was never a fan of Gaahl, he was a million times more charismatic and a better vocalist than Pest could ever dream of becoming. Heck, there was even a girl in the crowd standing next to me who was a better growler than Pest, something she proved by ‘singing’ along through almost the entire set.
There was no certain place or occurrence to hang our attention on, and so my mind started wandering almost before the first song was over…
Well, that’s not entirely true; at first I did notice that there must have been a sale in a nearby hardware store, considering the size and not to mention amount of nails worn by the band members. Secondly, and this did produce a small smirk on my face, I could not help noticing the enormous codpiece worn by Pest, it damn near reached his knees! Wonder if he was compensating for something..?

And, eh, that was it, really. I’m sad to say that there was absolutely nothing memorable about this show, and I truly hope that things will not carry on this way with the band if I’m ever to see them again…
At least so far, it stands 1-0 for the stopped version of the band.
