Dying Fetus
Brutal Assault - 2010
Text: Tobias Nilsson Photo: Lunah Lauridsen
After the quite different experience with Diablo Swing Orchestra, it was once more time to dig our hands into some good old death metal, delivered by veterans of the trade Dying Fetus.
As Dying Fetus has been no more than a three-piece since the departure of guitarist Mike Kimball in 2007, this ranked as the smallest band we saw at the festival, but me thinks the extra space they had on stage must have been taken directly from the grounds below, as the crowd was more crowded than it had been for the entire day, and maybe even more.
This resulted in a quite calm crowd-experience contra the brutally violent music. It wasn’t for lack of trying though, but since we were packed as herrings in a can, the only movement possible was a slight rocking motion, performed completely unanimous by the entire audience.
And then there was ‘that guy’. As you know, at any given social event of a certain size, there is always ‘that guy’. At the Dying Fetus show on Brutal Assault 2010, ‘that guy’ was a guy who crowd-surfed (not that this qualifies you as ‘that guy’) wearing a pigs-head mask (yup, there it is!). Why, you might ask yourself.
Maybe it was meant as a comment to the very low-end pig-like noises known as John Gallagher’s vocals; maybe he had been severely sun-burned the previous days and needed to rest his face. The most likely reply is; ”It seemed like a good idea at the time”.
Now, you may notice that I haven’t written much about the band up to this point, and if so, you would be completely and utterly right.
The sad reason is that there really isn’t anything to tell. The three members of the band took their positions on the stage at the beginning of the show, held them during the show, and when finished, they left. That just about sums up the whole thing, I’m afraid. Not much to work with…
