In League With Satan was a co-headlining European tour between Dimmu Borgir and Behemoth, with Dark Funeral supporting, and the final stop on the tour was in KB Hallen, Copenhagen.
I don’t know if the setup was the same for every show, but here Behemoth was the middle band, having Dimmu Borgir end the night later on.

Between Dark Funeral and Behemoth, a large curtain hung between the fans and the stage, and after an introductory intro with the song Noc Szatana by K-AT, the music changed character and took on a more classical tone as the second or continued intro.
This, paired with a video production of Nergal moving about, possibly taken from one of their music videos, running on the screen at the same time, helped set the mood for the show, and when the curtain finally dropped, we could see the stage transformed. The band’s iconic mic stands were there, and there was a whole row of light rigs set up, stretching out to either side of the stage from the drumkit in the middle. Those lights proved to give a good atmosphere through the gig.
The band started off with Daimonos, and through the next approximately 70 minutes, they delivered a set touching on several of their albums, playing well-worn live staples as well as brand new material in the shape of the title track from this year’s EP, I, Scvlptor.

While Dark Funeral had done an ok job with their performance, it was easy to see that we were in a wholly different satanic league with Behemoth. Nergal had his pedal to the metal from the start, and the rest of the gang started out well enough, but got more and more into it as the show went on. Especially Orion was happy stomping about the place, and didn’t shy away from using the slightly heightened podium at the front of the stage. Hell, he even left the stage towards the end of the show, taking a walk though the security pit and getting up on the fence once in a while, and even though he was busy being evil, he still had the time and presence of mind to stop to pick up and return a mobile phone someone had managed to drop.

In classic Behemoth style, there were quite a few outfit changes to go through through the show, and while they weren’t allowed to use their pyro show, this being KB Hallen after all, there were also a few effects to liven up the visuals. No smoke without fire is a common idiom, but that didn’t affect Behemoth, as they used plenty of smoke cannons throughout. Nergal also used a flashlight to light up his face from below while miming along to the spoken words of The Shit Ov God in classic campfire tale style.
Most surprising though, was that the stage once more was hidden behind a curtain after Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel, one that dropped at the start of I, Scvlptor to reveal that the middle of the podium had raised up higher in the air with Nergal standing there in a long dress, foregoing his guitar for this track in order to play more on his character.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better audience than Copenhagen for this, the last show of the tour!”
- Adam Michal ‘Nergal’ Darski (vocals/guitar)

That this was something the crowd had been looking forward to was easy to see. The audience had easily doubled or more in size since the time Dark Funeral had held the stage, and they were more active in their expression as well. There were now crowdsurfers, more headbanging and moshing, and a whole lot more singing going on. The Shit Ov God had a good bout of this, as well as a few older tracks. While the crowded contact was a bit in the background at the start of the show, it too grew through the show, and Nergal even stopped up for a minute, asking if the sound was good enough, and wanted to know if everything felt good, before he went on to thank the crew for helping to create the stunning show that he himself was now executing.

Behemoth put on quite a show, I have to admit. My expectations were high, as they usually put on quite a show, but with their new tricks, they still managed to surpass them and surprise me. Without a doubt the best gig of the evening.
