Turisas

Brutal Assault - 2009

As I had missed them at the last festival we visited together, I can’t begin to say how delighted I was to get another shot at seeing Turisas here at Brutal Assault.
This was of course quickly reflected in my notes of the show, with the first word to spill from my pen; “Übergreat!”

I was not alone in my joy of seeing these warrior Finns; the general response to the band from the audience was breathtaking, especially in songs such as In The Court Of Jarisleif where crowd and band alike went completely bananas. Also Rasputin and the epic ending track Battle Metal (the latter shouted into action by the crowd, very reminiscent of the 2008 version of the song) were clear favourites.
I don’t believe I have to say how well the bands own performance was; if you have seen them you know they never let you down, and if you haven’t, well, go do something about it as soon as possible!
The warlord himself, Mathias Nygård, was so convincing and powerful in his attempts at getting the crowd to sing along that he even managed to get drummer Tuomas ‘Tude’ Lehtonen to rise from his chair and raise his voice in unison with the rest of us.

As I think I have made clear, I absolutely loved the show from start to finish. The only problem was that the finish was much too close to the start, and the only thing I feel I lack now is a headliner tour from Turisas, where they will have time to play much, much more of their brilliant repertoire.
