Returning to the Mass Hallucination further down the line, we were excited to check in on the bands and see how they were doing. Apparently Vomitory and Vreid had switched positions this time around, so that the Norwegian Pitch Black Brigade was up first.
“So what do you say, are you ready for some headbanging or what?!”

I was happy to see Vreid again as I had been absolutely blown away by their Copenhagen show, but somehow it felt a bit odd to get them on first. I wanted the anticipation to last a little longer.
Still, this was the setup for the night, and after a quick intro we were thrown straight into Kraken, which still works absolute wonders as an opener. The lights weren’t the band’s best friend this night, and with a distinct lack of proper frontlights, you couldn’t make out the musicians too well, which was sad as they are a rather expressive band.
The music was still on point though, as they moved quickly down the now familiar setlist shoving things in motion with Pitch Black right after Kraken. Or so it should have, but something was a little… off…
The band was lively on stage, and there was some action in the crowd as well, but the connection wasn’t really there. Even with trying, the band just didn’t seem to take off this time around.
The gig was far from a failure. Vreid played well, and the performance was good, and they even got a solid reaction from the crowd. The energy just wasn’t all there, and I have a sneaking suspicion that things would have been better, had they not been the first band out - but who can say for sure?
What we can say is that Vreid is still a great band, but even great bands can have an off night once in a while, and it seems like we hit one here. Maybe the band felt it as well, because they were quickly off the stage after the last song, and even though they only had 30 minutes to play, it still felt like they rushed through it, and I think they walked off earlier than needed.
Setlist:
Kraken
Pitch Black
The Skies Turn Black
Into The Mountains
From These Woods
Lifehunger
