Forcentury
The Rock, Copenhagen - 2009
Text: Tobias Nilsson Photo: Lunah Lauridsen
Forcentury is a band which only recently was brought to my attention; actually only earlier this month after visiting the Iron Fire release party also held at The Rock. This is because one of the two guitarists of said band is also the guitarist of Forcentury; namely Marc Masters. But the musical inbreed (if you will) does not end there as the singer and bassist of tonight’s main act, Nightlight, are also from Iron Fire…
With Marc was their new singer Johnn Tordenro, guitarist nr. 2 Jens-Christian (a.k.a. JaCK), Jonas on drums and Andreas on keyboards. Since they lost their permanent bass player a couple of months ago, a replacement for the show was found in Palle Jacobsen.
And what kind of show was it?
Well, standing a bit outside of the goth oriented theme of the night, Forcentury delivered a dose of straight to the point heavy metal with a lot of harmonies interwoven with the fast-paced rhythm section.
This was actually their debut concert, and they wisely chose to start it off in a good way with a song one could know from their MySpace site called Bottom Line Zombies (the song, that is…).
After this it was a hard rocking ride through the 45 minutes they had to play, ending with the other song from their MySpace; The Abyss.
Part of the band, headed by Johnn and Marc gave a lively show, and Andreas also added to the festivities, especially after he left his big keyboards behind and joined the others with a keytar nicely remodelled with 3 inch studs and a whole band of Christmas lights which lit up during his solos.
On the other hand, although technically competent, there wasn’t much show to be found in JaCK and Palle, which in my opinion need to loosen up a bit more while playing in front of a live audience.
Well, live and live...
The Rock was about half full while Forcentury were playing, and all were taking it very easy. Even though the in between songs was filled with loud rounds of applause and whistling, there wasn’t much life to be found while the band was playing. The heat on stage didn’t seem to slip down into the gathered crowd below sadly.
Still, for a first concert I think they gave it a good shot, and I believe these guys will be around for some time to come.
Setlist:
Bottom Line Zombies
Land Of Mirrors
Speculator
Back In 845
Son Of Poseidon
Valhalla’s Call
The Abyss
