Åfysatan
Babel, Malmö - 2015
Text: Tobias Nilsson Photo: Lunah Lauridsen
Malfunction had put together another punk night at Babel in Malmö. You might remember Dia Psalma from earlier this year?
Anyway, just as the last time, there were two support bands, and I knew neither of them. Sadly, we only caught the end of the first band, Två Krig, and didn’t manage to form much of an opinion about them, but decided to grab a beer instead, to be ready for band number two.
“You are the most beautiful audience we have had in Malmö, and the biggest!”
- Jocke Skog (bas)
Band number two was called Åfysatan, and even though I didn’t know the band, it didn’t take me long to recognise two thirds of the musicians – on drums was Stefan ‘Stipen’ Carlsson (Dia Psalma, Strebers), and on bass we had Jocke Skog (Clawfinger). Vocals and guitars were handled by Misha Hedini (ex-Rövfitta), a man I had no prior knowledge of, but it didn’t take a genius (lucky me) to figure out that he fit perfectly together with the other two, both musically and performance ways.
That I hadn’t heard about the band, even with these well-known names in the line-up wasn’t too strange, it would turn out. After all, they only formed last year, and didn’t release anything until this year. In a wild spurt of spontaneity and creativity however, they have managed to deliver no less than three EP’s, and one full length Best Of album onto an unsuspecting crowd already. Apparently, their motto is to just have fun with it, and I must admit it’s working!
“Everyone who buys a t-shirt get a hug!”
- Misha Hedini (vocals/guitar)
That fun’s an important part in the band’s livelihood was easy enough to spot this evening – the band probably spent as much time of their set cracking jokes as they did playing songs. Which in turn had hilarious lyrics, as far as I could keep up.
Åfysatan was exactly the type of energy injection that any band could wish for in a support act, and even though the Malmö crowd didn’t seem to know what had hit them in the beginning, or how to handle it, any and all resistance quickly melted away in front of this well-oiled machine of speedy humour and humorous speed. Hedini and Skog took turns talking, but everyone in the band was impressively present and attentive of the audience. More than once comments came about specific happenings at this show, or answers to the few song requests that were shouted. Yeah, give them a year or two, and they’ll certainly be burrowed deeper into the minds of everyone, and people will recognise the band and the songs better.
I’m not gonna lie, Åfysatan took me with my pants down, as the saying goes, and after a short stint of confusion, I fully loved every minute they had to perform in.
Oh, and if you actually did know every member of the band, what were your thoughts about that guest appearance? Peps Persson, huh. From Rammstein no less. Well now. Turned out to be Pontus Andersson, also from Dia Psalma, but that’s ok, he too was able to join in on the fun at full blast!
