Vuur

Metaldays - 2018

True to tradition, well, more or less, we wanted to take a leap of faith on the first band of the mainstage, hoping the festival would give us something goodness. This year, we almost made it. Meaning, we caught the second band at least.
Perusing the program, we were told this band was Vuur. What's Vuur? No idea. Looking at the band photo however, made me go, wait a minute, I recognise that face! That's Anneke van Giersbergen (ex-The Gathering, and a whole lot more)! Awesome! And wait, that face is familiar as well - it's Ed Warby (ex-Gorefest, and a whole lot more)!
As they say on the internet - shit just got real!

“How you doin’? It's so good to see you! It's so warm, I love it! I love you guys!”
- Anneke van Giersbergen (vocals/guitar)

Yes, Vuur, this completely new (to me, they've been around since 2016) constellation got to open the mainstage of Metaldays here in 2018. For us, that is.
They did so to a perfect sky and sun, and an extremely small audience. I guess I wasn't the only one unfamiliar with the band name, considering the individual musicians names ought to garner a whole heck of a lot more interest than what was on display here.
Nonetheless, the band took it in stride, and acted as if those who had shown up were the most important people in the world, without a word of complaint that there weren't more of us. Absolutely the right way to go about things, according to this writer.

In general, Vuur just got everything right. They came packed with great material, an equally great mood, and their performance - unlike my vocabulary right now - great!
Giersbergen played along on the guitar in some songs, but it was in the songs where she left that to Jord Otto and Ferry Duijsens that her skills as a frontwoman truly unfolded, and her grip on the audience tightened.
On that matter, I might add that sure, the audience was embarrassingly small to begin with, but at least it grew throughout, and ended up being… Well, it was still small, but at least it was bigger than it had initially been.
Let's face it, they probably need to establish the name better before reaching further heights, and I for one hope it will happen. I want to experience this again some day.

Vuur ended up being the biggest positive surprise of the festival, and even one of my favourite concerts in all from it - hell, that ending cover of Strange Machines gave me chills, literally!
