Brutal Assault - 2009

It suited me just fine that we didn’t have to stress through Vreid’s show here at Brutal Assault, as had been the case last time we were to see them.

The pitch black brigade entered the stage in front of a midsized audience a bit past six in the afternoon, and even though the sun was still shining hot in the sky, I could not imagine a better setting than this old army fortress for especially this band; they who also put so much history, especially war-related, into their music and lyrics.
My bet is that the band felt it to; even though Vreid (=angry) looked grim enough to fit their name, it wasn’t hard to see a smile sneak up on guitarist Ese’s face more than once during the show, whereas his band-mate Jarle ‘Hvàll’ Kvåle concentrated on banging his head off in time with the furious music.
I recognized songs as Disciplined, Svart and Speak Goddamnit from the last time I saw them, and the speeches sounded quite familiar as well; still, Sture Dingsøyr (vocals/guitar) did a good job in speaking to us between the songs as he explained the history of their contents, and with the slightest request for people to raise their voices he managed to fire us up into a loud roar.

Throughout the show there was a very good atmosphere over the concert area of Brutal Assault, and after a rather weak start I finally felt that this day was starting to take off in the right direction music- and performance-wise.
