Voodoo Kungfu

Wacken - 2008

Voodoo Kungfu (a.k.a. Ling Yi) was Chinas contribution to the Wacken Metal Battle, and it was partly this that drew me to their show; I had to see what the largest country in the world would produce into the metal-world.
Also, I was drawn in by the band-photo in the program, and last but not least; that excellent name of theirs!

Visually, the band seemed to go off in every direction of the spectrum, but it was still a very strong impression, and coupled with the lively show put on by especially vocalist Nan Lee and guitarist Zhao Feng, Voodoo Kungfu was a force to be reckoned with. Of course, the rest of the band was very good as well, but it was those two that stuck out the most in my opinion.
Musically, it was just as diverse as in the visuals. There were elements of almost black metal like darkness, faster modern metalcore passages, and hints of traditional eastern music with the addition of the Ma Tou Quin (or Morin Khuur; the horse head fiddle) a traditional Mongolian instrument.

There was a pretty good turn-out in the W.E.T. Stage, where they were playing, at least so for a band who is as of yet relatively unknown on western ground. At a start, the audience took it rather calmly, but as the show progressed everyone came more and more alive, most likely because of the intense show on stage, and it ended up being a very cool concert. Fun idea with playing a Bob Marley cover in the middle of it all as well; one more direction to take.
Had we been allowed to do so, my vote for Metal Battle band of the year would definitely have gone to Voodoo Kungfu.
