Volbeat

Metalcamp - 2008

Beware, the Danes are a' coming!
Actually, I found it impressive to see TWO Danish bands at a festival so far away from our fair country, considering that Denmark isn't that big on exporting metal bands at the moment. First up was Mercenary, giving us a nice dose of prog-metal, and then it was time for the rockabilly revivers Volbeat. I suppose Volbeat is the chose exception to what I wrote before, as I hear their career is just as blooming abroad as it is here at home.

The clock was past 7 p.m., but the sun was still burning hot in the sky as Volbeat took the stage before a decent amount of people. Not too crowded though.
At a start, Volbeat seemed to suffer a bit under the heat; they were up to all of their usual tricks, there just wasn't so much of it, and it all went a bit slow, I thought. Then again, the crowd seemed to take it quite easy as well. Even though they made a lot of noise, there wasn't much action at this point. There was a mosh, but it was only visited by a few people.
It all changed a bit when Pool Of Booze, Booze, Booza was played though, both the band and the crowd were livened up by this delightful party tune.

It all seemed to work out fine, except for the fact that it seemed that Michael Poulsen, vocals/guitar, had had a bit too much to drink this day, a problem shared by Soilwork's singer Björn 'Speed' Strid from the other day; thankfully Michael was in no way as bad a shape as he had been though.
It did show a couple of times in the set though; in the solo for The Garden's Tale he had changed his regular guitar out with a Gibson Les Paul. He obviously was not happy with its performance though, and simply threw it to the floor at the end of the solo. Honestly, is that any way of handling such a beautiful instrument? If he's not pleased with it, he could just give it to me; I'd take good care of it. (and back to the show...)
Another problem was that Michael seemingly had forgotten the words for Danny & Lucy (11 pm), so instead of singing the normal verses, we were treated to a lot of boptibop bop.

As always with these guys, we were given an entertaining show, which sadly was a bit on the short side. Also, strangely, they did not choose to present any of their new songs, something they have done at earlier shows; it was probably also due to lack of time.

The Human Instrument
Mr. And Mrs. Ness
Radio Girl
Pool Of Booze, Booze, Booza
