Vader
The Rock, Copenhagen - 2008
Text: Tobias Nilsson Photo: Lunah Lauridsen
By this time, the crowd had grown much larger than it had been for any of the other bands of the night, Zebadiah Crowe, Zonaria and Grave. Although, even though the crowd was larger, Vader seemed to experience the same problem as Grave had done before them; a certain lack of energy.
Sure there was some headbanging going on in the front rows, but it seemed that it hadn't really grabbed a hold of anyone yet.
On that same note, the band seemed to have less energy than I am used to seeing them deliver. Of course, the music was tight and fast just as it should be, but it lacked that certain "being grabbed by the balls and get dragged around by a monster-truck" kind of feel that Vader's shows normally have.
"Copenhagen, are you afraid of the dark?!"
- Piotr Pawel 'Peter' Wiwczarek (vocals/guitar)
On a positive note, Peter (vocals, guitar) was the first one of all the frontmen tonight to speak between songs without altering his voice, and that's a big plus in my opinion. Sure, grim vocals can give a heightened effect for the music, but when just speaking to the fans I think using your normal voice is clearly preferable.
He was also courteous enough to give a big thank you for being back in Copenhagen, it has been two years at least since last we saw them here.
It was their semi-old release Reign Forever World (2001) that saw Vader getting back to the way I'm used to seeing them. The energy was really picked up a notch, and the effect was clear and immediate to see in the audience as well. Moshpits broke out, and the headbanging took on a whole new level. To quote tour-manager Darek "...today I felt like a teenager again..."
After a slightly slow start, Vader turned around and gave a perfect ending to the evening.
