Týr
The Rock, Copenhagen - 2009

First of all I would like to say how happy I was when I heard that Týr would play in Copenhagen again. It had been far too long since the last time I had seen them, and for them to (unintentionally) choose to play on my birthday; I couldn’t be happier.
As this was a co-headliner tour with Týr and Alestorm, I was happy to see that it was Týr who were the headliners for this show (how could it be any other way?).
They started the set with a new song, Hold The Heathen Hammer High, from their upcoming album By The Light Of The Northern Star. It was a great song to start with as it was up-tempo and had a great sing-along chorus which worked even though it was the first time we heard it. If you couldn’t wait for the entire album, it was also available together with two other new songs, The Northern Lights and Northern Gate, on a split CD with Alestorm and Heidevolk called Black Sails Over Europe (i.e. a special tour CD).
Other than this surprise, they kept to the tried classics throughout the rest of the set and the audience loved it.
Ok, so the crowd was on a whole a bit calmer than they had been for the Alestorm set, but the sing-along was still insane; in The Wild Rover it was actually hard to even hear Heri Joensen’s vocals over the singing of the crowd.
On the other hand, the band played a top performance where everything worked. The new armour was cool, the sound was the best for the entire evening and their mood was so high I can’t even remember the last time I saw a band who seemed to enjoy themselves like this on stage.
So what was the problem then?
In a word = LENGTH! The set-length clearly ratted out that Týr was to be the warm-up band for the most of the tour as it was far, far too short. Eight songs on the actual setlist just aren’t enough in any way when you are supposed be the main act of the evening. Not only was the set short in itself, they had also cut the entire intro off of Regin Smidur; this just won’t do!
Thankfully Týr tried to correct this by adding a song as an encore which wasn’t planned, but even after nine songs we were still hungry for more, much more.
This said, I still loved the show and I can’t wait for the new album and the next show (which hopefully will be in full-length).
Setlist:
Hold The Heathen Hammer High
Sinklars Vísa
Regin Smidur
Hail To The Hammer
The Wild Rover
Wings Of Time
Lokka Táttur
Ramund Hin Unge
Encore:
Gátu Ríma
