Turisas
The Rock, Copenhagen - 2008
Text: Tobias Nilsson Photo: Lunah Lauridsen
To the sound of an intro worthy of the valkyries, Turisas entered the stage accompanied by the collective cheers of a well-filled The Rock.
As was the fact for their support band, Heidra, Turisas' sound was left wanting in my opinion. All those great symphonic pieces of melody I thought I would be treated to were completely drowned out. Then again, I could have chosen to stand somewhere else than with my ears pointing straight into Jussi Wickström's guitar speaker I suppose...
Lisko Mäkinen, accordion, was missing from the show, due to illness I believe. For the rest of the tour he had been replaced by a young girl whose name escapes me, but she certainly filled the part well, and gave one hell of a show. They all did, actually. I have seldom witnessed so much, in lack of a better word, show in a concert, I must admit. Mathias 'Warlord' Nygård kept the show running between tracks with funny little anecdotes and hailing Tuborg, and of course there was Olli Vänskäs unforgettable violin solo.
There was also a lot of action going on in the songs, especially so in the so-called dance song In The Court Of Jarisleif which saw crowd and band alike jump up and down and everybody hooking arms and doing little dances. Another crowd-pleaser was their cover of the Boney M song Rasputin. I don't think I've ever seen people go so completely amok in The Rock as they did for this song with stage dives, crowd surfing and anything else conceivable.
All in all, this was a great show, and I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

A Portage To The Unknown
