Suicidal Angels
Metalfest - 2011

The Greek thrash beasts of Suicidal Angels were the next band to take the main stage, and even though the crowd was, to me, surprisingly small crowd especially considering the surprisingly large crowd Arkona had had just before these guys, it was one dedicated crowd who had shown up for Suicidal Angels, evidently heard in frontman Melissourgos comment.
”You’re more than great, you’re sick! You’re fucking sick and you know it!”
- Nick Melissourgos (vocals/guitar)
The band set the pace with opening Reborn In Violence, which is also the first real song off of their latest album Dead Again, an album which we would revisit several times at today’s show; or to put it another way, I was quite surprised to see/hear that out of the ten songs played today, only one song was not from said album! I’m guessing the band is either very proud o their latest offering, or not so proud of their earlier two. Either way, this was one show which should send any present old school’er straight to thrash heaven.
Already for the second song, Bleeding Holocaust, Melissourgos asked for a moshpit, and a moshpit he got as the crowd was only too willing to start throwing themselves unto each other in furious bliss!
It didn’t take long before the show began attracting more and more onlookers, and the simple mosh changed forms into both maximum dust stirring circle-pits and walls of death. Actually, the air was getting so dirty it was almost hard to see the band at times as I had pulled a little backwards so as not to get caught in the worst fray.
Thankfully, the dear singer saw it fit to save our throats from the damages of dust and heat, and threw some water bottles out to us once in a while. I’m sure this was most appreciated by those who managed to grab them, and a nice gesture from the band.
Up on the stage, not much action was seen except for a wild and frenetic headbanging, but this fit very well with the style of the band so I’m (for once) not complaining about it.
Even though the crowd never got really big, despite me thinking this would be right up the alley of the festivals general direction of music, and even though I personally feel I get more out of this band at a smaller club venue, I would still say that this was a good show. Maybe not the one that will be remembered from the festival, but certainly worth seeing while we were there.
Setlist:
Reborn In Violence
Bleeding Holocaust
Dead Again
Violent Abuse
Beggar Of Scorn
Search For Recreation
The Lies Of Resurrection
Suicide Solution
Final Dawn
Apokalithosis
