Slayer
Unholy Alliance, Valby Hallen - 2008

The self-written main act of the third edition of The Unholy Alliance was of course good old reliable Slayer.
Normally I would say that if have seen one Slayer show, you have seen them all. This is due to the fact that they maintain the same quality every time you see them, and also because the setlist hasn't really changed that much over the last several years.
Then again, why complain about a band that knows how to present their music, and also knows and accepts what the audience wants to hear?
The show started already before the curtains dropped with lights of swirling pentagrams and Slayer logos.
After this, the band started out hard with the everlasting classic War Ensemble, and the well-filled hall loved it. A big mosh started out in the middle of the floor, and it didn't end until after the show was done; only changing in size from time to time.
And even though I started out by saying that the quality of Slayer's concerts doesn't vary that much, I can still say that this was one of the best ones I have seen. The part about the setlist stays true, though, as there were a lot of the older songs played; in fact the last half of the setlist was their classic album Reign In Blood played in its entirety.
The highlight of the show for me personally though was Seasons In The Abyss, which is the song that got me listening to Slayer in the first place. That song will never go out of fashion!
Surprisingly, they did not play Dead Skin Mask from that same album, a song I would never have though Slayer to perform without playing.
Oh, and let's not forget they played a new song as well; Psycho (or something close to that at least).
So, was there any downside to this whole event then, you might ask yourself. Yes, there was.
First off, as has been my complaint for all the concerts here at The Unholy Alliance, the sound quality stunk because of the audio-unfriendly sports hall hosting the event.
Secondly; even though the overall lighting worked well, and the light-wall they used as backdrop was very good, the over-sized strobe lights they used were a real pain in the behind.
None of these two were enough to bring the overall enjoyment of the concert down though, and I think just by this show (and for me, Amon Amarth as well) we could all walk out with the feeling of getting our money's worth, and then some.
Setlist:
War Ensemble
Chemical Warfare
Ghosts Of War
Jihad
Psycho
Seasons In The Abyss
Dittohead
Live Undead
Cult
Disciple
South Of Heaven
Angel Of Death
Piece By Piece
Necrophobic
Altar Of Sacrifice
Jesus Saves
Criminally Insane
Reborn
Epidemic
Postmortem
Raining Blood
