Sepultura
Brutal Assault - 2010
Text: Tobias Nilsson Photo: Lunah Lauridsen
And so it was time for Lock Up, or was it? Unbeknownst to us, there had been a change in the program, the first of many, and so it was instead time for Sepultura, a change I which both made me glad and sad…
To explain, it made me glad as I would much rather see Sepultura than Lock Up as I like the former much more than the latter.
It saddened me since it had been a long run from stage to stage so I was getting pretty tired by this point, and I would like to have more energy for a Sepultura gig. Secondly, now almost all the bands I really wanted to see were placed on the same day, not leaving too much to look forward to for the rest of the festival…
A lot of others had apparently seen the shift coming though, and the ground was filled with fans as A-Lex IV rolled out through the speakers as an intro to the concert, followed by A-Lex I and Moloko Mesto from Sepultura’s latest album, A-Lex.
The pressure was insane, and as the band began playing all hell broke loose among the crowd. Oh how I wished I had known about this a bit earlier so that I could have prepared for what was happening all around me!
Sepultura was this year celebrating their 25th anniversary as a band, and they did it by playing songs from all over the vast time-span of their life, with the odd exception of the three first Derrick Green era albums, Against, Nation and Roorback.
Still, the songs they did play came delivered with an excellent performance; their new drummer (yes, anyone after Igor Cavalera is still new to me) Jean Dolabella kicked ass behind the drums, Paolo Jr. and Andreas Kisser were cool as always, and Green kicked up a storm headbanging with his mighty dreads.
Green also took on extra percussion duties in the start of both Refuse/Resist and Roots Bloody Roots; and not thinking the crowd was quite wild enough he proclaimed that all the old-school Sepultura fans should start moving as they began playing the Septic Schizo / Escape To The Void mix, which they certainly did!
This concert was really kicking, and I only wish I would have been as well.
It also seemed to me that the band had increased the tempo of all their songs, and this made them sound even better than usual.
Setlist:
A-Lex IV
A-Lex I / Moloko Mesto
Arise
Refuse/Resist
What I Do!
Convicted In Life
The Treatment
Troops Of Doom
Septic Schizo / Escape To The Void
Territory
Inner Self
Roots Bloody Roots
