Sabaton

Amager Bio, Copenhagen - 2010

At long last, it was time for the Swedish metal-machine known as Sabaton to wage war upon the stage of Amager Bio.
Before them, both Thaurorod and Alestorm had done a good job warming us all up, so that we now were ready to be sent to the fray of battle with the warlords themselves…

Showing off some Swedish pride, or more likely a good sense of humour, there was before the actual intro of the concert played the entire Europe song The Final Countdown, something which got the at least parts of the crowd singing along already before the band had arrived.
From there on out things only went up; from the first song, Ghost Brigade, to the final well-used medley of Metal Machine and Metal Crüe, people were partying and singing loudly without end!
Actually, in between these two, a lot of things had happened since the last times we had seen the band, as explained by singer Joakim Brodén; ”After the request of our fans, we’ve changed the setlist a lot since the last tour”.
Well, I’d say; for the first time ever on tour, The Final Solution was played, and I can’t remember hearing such a song as Swedish Pagans before either (though I may be mistaken on this one).
Not only had they changed a lot since their last tour, they also undertook the impressive work of changing the setlist for each and every show on this tour as well, something which certainly makes things even more interesting for the fans, but at the same time must make things much more difficult for the band. Not that this seemed to matter though, Sabaton have a great momentum going for them at this point in time, and it seems they will do everything they can to keep the fire going!
This meant that this was the first time during the tour that The Art Of War was played, Hellrider made a comeback after leaving the set during the last show, and Aces In Exile replaced Screaming Eagles as the air-raiding song from the latest album.

“Let’s talk about war!”
- Joakim Brodén (vocals)

Brodén was acing himself in entertaining the crowd between songs, doing a much better job than the last time we saw them, at Metalcamp. Sure, gay-jokes were still in there, but they were mixed up with much else as well, and it all felt very fresh and vital. He had some special crowd-pleasing lines up his sleeve, as when mentioning that the Danish language may be fucked up, but on the other hand the beers here are much better than in Sweden, something I can relate only too well with.
He even managed to get the crowd fired up so much that during 40:1 (which someone had come prepared for, and threw a Polish flag up to the band), a large section of the audience came tumbling through the fence, which was simply not strong enough to support the weight of the Danish fans. Both looking extremely happy and surprised, he commented; ”We’ve crashed a crash-barrier, now that’s very impressive!”
Of course, security reasons forbade the show to continue for as long as it took the security men to get the fence back in place, but as to keep the fun going while the band was taking a break, Brodén initiated an impromptu sing-along of choruses from the bands back-catalogue, where the audience were the ones dictating the setlist. Songs both in and out of the normal setlist were sung, and we all had a great time. As soon as everything was back in order, the end of 40:1 was played, and as the show moved on to The Final Solution, Brodén thanked us for keeping the energy up even with the problems. If it had any impact on the final amount of songs being played, I cannot say, but I don’t think so. Maybe they just picked up the pace a bit, at least Saboteurs felt quite a lot faster than it does on album...
Other stunts I feel worth mentioning in this context are the short Achmed The Dead Terrorist impersonation (Silence! I kill you!), and when Brodén entitled himself to an ass-kicking from Alestorm, mentioning that there should be no moral or other problem in stealing their music from The Pirate Bay...

What can I say other than that this was a clear win for Sabaton; yet another flawless concert which saw the band at their absolutely best earned them another victory-medal to put on their chest. Not even such an obstacle as a torn-down crowd-fence was able to stop this panzer division from running its heavy metal tanks all over the Danish audience...
