Raubtier

KB, Malmö - 2016

With its newest album, Bärsärkagång, out and about, it was once again time for the beast from the north to roam the kingdom of Sweden, and one of the places it was sighted, was in the southern city of Malmö.

“Raubtier comrades, this must be what’s called the elite of Sweden!”
- Pär Hulkoff (vocals/guitar)

Even though KB isn’t the biggest venue around, Raubtier had brought their great looking gear with them, including that stylish gun-barrel drumkit. Just revealing that was enough to fire up the crowd, and the sing-along commenced in the first of the two intro melodies used, Be Mig by Nordman, and didn’t let up until the final note had rung out, about an hour and a half later.
The Raubtier crew, consisting of the now well-known faces of Pär Hulkoff, Mattias ‘Buffeln’ Lind, and Jonas Kjellgren, once again brought their a-game to town, and I’ll be damned if they didn’t even up the ante a bit. They were all energetic, powerful, and most important of all, having a hell of a good time! I lost count on how many times Hulkoff and Kjellgren were down on their knees, battling their instruments against each other, or gently leaning the ones head on the other one’s shoulder, while still being crushingly heavy!

“One thing I have learned from ten years of touring, is that all of you sing better than I do!”
- Hulkoff (vocals/guitar)

Through all of their wit and energy, Malmö was right there by the band’s side, delivering one hell of a crowd experience complimenting the concert.
I’ve already mentioned the sing-along show, but should not fail to mention that we at several times got to take choruses over completely, seeing Hulkoff step away from the microphone until the next verse commenced.
There was more though, and already in the second song, Bothniablod, people were jumping and applauding like crazy. Later, when we reached Världherravälde, Hulkoff challenged us to jump so hard that the vibrations would leave Stockholm in rubbles, and Malmö did the best they could to comply.
Even between songs, Malmö showed its strength, and shouted so loud it at several times left Hulkoff mute with astonishment, the time the crowd shouted for a reprise after Sveriges Elit is one of several good examples.
And of course, you know things went really crazy when the final song of the evening, Låt Napalmen Regna, played out.

“If you have a pacemaker you should turn it off, or this will kill you!”
- Hulkoff (vocals/guitar)

Yes, the beast from the north laid waste to Malmö in the most fulfilling of ways, and I cannot for the life of me find a fault in the show.
Well, ok, that’s not entirely true… There was the fact that between every song, there was a blackout break for the band to get a drink. There was the unsurprising setlist that lacked several of my personal favourites. And there was the fact that the show really wasn’t very long, if you counted the minutes.
But, you know what? Not a single one of these things bothered me one bit, and that’s saying something of the impact this concert had. Even though it was short for a headliner gig, it had the perfect length, and anything more would have been tiring and overstaying their welcome – now we could leave, and still be hungry for more. And even though my personal favourites were lacking, all of their material has something to be loved. And the blackout breaks? Hell, we needed a chance to catch our collective breath as well!
This is exactly how a show should be done, and there isn’t a single thing I would have had differently. Period.
