Pestilence

Brutal Assault - 2009

As old-school death/thrashers Pestilence took the stage, my first reaction was one of disbelief. Upon seeing the green jogging suit Tony Choy (bass) had chosen to wear for the occasion, I had a hard time taking the bands aggressive attitude seriously.

“If I was a girl I would cry right now, because we fucking love you so much!”
- Patrick Mameli (vocals/guitar)

Apart from this somewhat silly but crowd-pleasing comment, Mameli held a much truer and harder attitude than aforementioned bassist, and his grip on the audience helped create a very good atmosphere for the show. Already in the second song for the night, Chemo Therapy, he got a good chant going as he shouted “Chemo” and had the audience reply “Therapy”.

The audience was nothing to complain about either; Pestilence had drawn out the largest crowd of people I had seen all day, and they were really stirring things up. Dust, among others… The moshpit was near insane, and the dry ground hung like a brown-grey cloud all around us as it was constantly kicked up by the lively fans. A great deal of old school headbanging not to be avoided either of course…

Admittedly, Pestilence isn’t really my taste, but looking beyond that I felt they played a very competent show, and I’m not surprised the gathered fans loved it to the fullest.
