Morbid Angel

Metalcamp - 2008

My mother always said that metal is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're going to get. (actually, that's not true; she's never uttered such nonsense, but anyway...)
This was still true about my experience with the Morbid Angel show at Metalcamp.
Now, the attentive reader might have noticed from earlier reviews that I am not normally a big fan of the more extreme genres of metal, so what I expected for this show was to stand around for 70 minutes of boredom, watching some guys trying to look evil, and apart from that not really doing anything.
Boy, was I wrong!

Morbid Angel was full of energy as they took the stage, and they didn't try to look evil at all, they actually were genuinely happy. "Finally Morbid Angel comes to Slovenia" shouted singer/bassist David Vincent at a short break from running all over the stage, which is something he did a lot. I feel that there are many bands which could learn a lot about performing live from this show. It was as good a proof as any that even if you're not the biggest fan of the music, you can still enjoy yourself as long as the show is good. Even though I had dreaded it a bit beforehand, I truly felt that this was a perfect way to end the day.

Morbid Angel gave it their all on stage, again quite visible on David Vincent. He was sporting his tight plastic shirt with the big pentagram, and with all the movement it must have gotten quite hot in there. Halfway through the show, he was literally dripping sweat all over.
Something else that also was hot was the screaming guitar-solo provided by a fired up Trey Azagthoth, or at least I believe it was him. Can't say for sure, since I don't know Morbid Angel that well.
The only downside to it all had actually nothing to do with the band. What I'm thinking about is when the fire breather who usually frequents the beach bar with his blazing show, started to blow giant balls of fire in the middle of the crowd. People were smart enough to give him some room yes, but it was still a festival, last show of the evening, and most of the crowd was most likely very drunk. It all just seemed to be an unnecessary security risk, if you ask me.

Again, since I don't know Morbid Angel that well, I'm not sure about all the song-titles, but I did have some help from Lunah. The set was concentrated around their classic release Covenant, spiced up with other songs from David Vincent's career in the band. As far as I heard, nothing from their time with Steve Tucker was played this evening.
We were also presented to a brand new song, called Nevermore.
