Kreator

Metalcamp - 2009

Kreator was the last band to play at Metalcamp this year, and they ended the show with a blast.
The crowd was already very large, a lot of people had come for Edguy who played before them, and now everyone wanted to stick around for the German thrash masters as they wreaked havoc on stage. If Edguy had been the wake-up call for people today, Kreator was all-out war!

”Slovenia, are you feeling aggressive?!”
- Miland 'Mille' Petrozza (vocals/guitar)

Well-known words spoken Mille, and yet so effective.

Even though it was late, it was the last day of the festival and (I think) several had gone home already, this didn’t stop the survivors to go completely amok for Kreator’s show with wild headbanging and a huge moshpit.
Of course, the band-members themselves weren’t standing idly by either; Petrozza was in a very angry mood (in a good way) and inflamed the audience to new heights of insanity, all the time accompanied by the breakneck headbanging skills of Christian ‘Speesy’ Giesler, the cool groove of Sami Yli-Sirniö and the crushing backbone beatings of Jürgen ‘Ventor’ Reil.

The scene may have been set for destruction and mayhem, but the stage wasn’t badly made either. Scenic and well made painted cloths were decorating the back and inner sides of the stage, and on the outer sides of the stage, Kreator made good use of the large screens hanging there.
For many of the songs there were different video images which followed the music and enhanced the mood of the songs, while on others, like the new Hordes Of Chaos and also Violent Revolution, the official promo video ran alongside the music. My personal favourite of the latter is without a doubt the Enemy Of God video, with the little girl and her… odd… behaviour.

I remembered the video show from the last time I saw Kreator here, but there was one other thing which the entire audience remembered far better than any video or particular scenic attribute; all the way back in 2006 Edguy had asked the crowd, for fun, to sing the Olé Olé song for Kreator, and this wish was, without any reminder, clearly still in effect! Between several, if not all, songs a loud chant of the words rose from the audience. At first Petrozza only smiled about it, but later on he tried to silence it down a bit so that they could get on with the actual show. It would seem this is something which will plague Kreator till the end of their days, or at least as long as they keep playing this festival.

As Sodom had played on the Saturday, and Destruction on the Monday, you could easily say that the entire German thrash elite was present at this year’s Metalcamp, but for me there was no doubt who the winners were – Kreator.
The gig was perfectly executed, with vitality, aggression and humour; and it was nice to see Kreator offering something else than red light and smoke in the form of stage production.
The only thing that could have lifted it even more, for me personally, was if they had incorporated some of their seemingly forgotten 90ies material, like Leave This World Behind, Golden Age or Chosen Few.
