Korpiklaani

Metaldays - 2019

Korpiklaani was a staple band of the festival back in the days when it was still known as Metalcamp, so it was a bit odd that it took so long for them to show up after the festival had changed to Metaldays.
Regardless, now they were here, and they were ready to party it up on the last day of the festival.

That Korpiklaani had been sorely missed was clear for all to see. The crowd was huge from the very start, and even though it was raining, it did nothing to slow down the party. Said party was raging both on and off the stage, crowdsurfing was constant, and people were jumping in place, and dancing!
Singing along has never been a big thing with Korpiklaani, except for those few obvious choruses, but even so, there were a lot of songs on the setlist this night that I was not familiar with. Not connecting in this way is all on me though, and not the band in the least.
Something else that wasn’t on the band, was that some way through the set, all of the power went out. Not for very long, maybe 10 minutes or so, but it was enough for a bit of confusion to settle in. As soon as the band noticed that the sound was back on (this came before the lights), they began jamming to keep the party going. It was odd, as it was pretty much completely black, but it worked - a nice testimony to the presence of the band members. Cell phones came out, and an intermediate light show was arranged until the power was back to light the stage properly.

The crowd was still all fired up, and even in the dark, they had time for both sitting down and rowing (a tradition I’ve never quite understood), and starting up a large circlepit, which was impressive due to no one being truly able to see where they were headed.
As soon as the lights came back as well, the concert and party continued as if nothing had happened, quite impressive if you ask me.
For all this though, the show never managed to group me completely. It was enjoyable, sure, but there was too much material I couldn’t relate to, to truly get in the spirit of the thing. Still, that ending was armstrong, and there we got a true taste of what this band can do on a final drunken festival day.
That Korpiklaani’s long awaited return to Tolmin was a success was undeniable however, and something tells me it won’t take them a full seven years before their next turn here.
