Immortal
Graspop Metal Meeting - 2008
Text: Tobias Nilsson Photo: Lunah Lauridsen
After the icy wastes of Sonata Arctica we went to see another frost-giant of the north, namely Immortal. Now, let it be known through-out the land, I'm not an Immortal fan. Actually, not a black metal fan in general, so...
But there were quite a few others who were, and they had come to pay tribute to these painted Norsemen.
"Fuckin' great!" a man next to me managed to get in while Immortal paused in the middle of Tyrants to hold a screaming contest between the left and right side of the audience. And yes, of course, there were a few entertaining bits in the show I suppose. There were a lot of pyrotechnics even though they were in a tent scene, Abbath did his usual fire-blowing, and apart from that there was a lot of walking around and looking grim going on. They played well enough, this has just never been for me, and so I find it hard judging the show fairly. Judging from the biggest part of the rest of the crowd, though, it was a very good show; there were a lot of devil horns raised and a lot of shouting along with the songs.
Towards the end Abbath excused the short play time (1 hour) and said; "It's a festival, so we can't give you a whole set, but we can't leave without playing Battles In The North!", and from the crowd's reaction I'd say they were forgiven. After another song they left the stage without further ado.
Setlist (incomplete):
At The Heart Of Winter
Sons Of Northern Darkness
Tyrants
One By One
Damned In Black
Battles In The North
Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark)
