Immortal
Brutal Assault - 2009

As Brutal Assault was waning towards its end, it seemed it pulled all the breaks and really let the shit hit the fan. Shit here being extremely brutal music, that is.
“Ladies and motherfuckers, we are Immortal!”
With this classic intro, Olve ‘Abbath’ Eikemo shouted out the arrival of the Norwegian blizzard beasts to the burning hot stage at Brutal Assault, and I could tell this was something many had been waiting for! I actually believe ALL visitors of the festival had crawled out of their tents for this very concert!
Visually, Immortal was (possibly) the only band at the festival with a real pyro-show which of course gave them a better frame to work in, but it was still the people of the band and not the effects which made the difference here.
Abbath was overwhelming us with a certified flood of his patented crab-walks, leg-lifting and “Meh!” shouts, as Ole ‘Apollyon’ Moe and Reidar ‘Horgh’ Horghagen stood for the grimmer, colder appearance of the show as they were beating away at their respective instruments.
Interestingly, as the show mowed on with classics such as Sons Of Northern Darkness and One By One, I actually felt moved by the show, and I even made a small sound slip between my lips as Abbath stopped Tyrants for an audience scream contest. This was my first ever Immortal show where I can sincerely say I enjoyed watching it!
Immortal was plagued by an unusually bad sound-quality, but even with this they managed to move their show across the confines of the stage and into the wildly thrashing crowd, and as the last headliner of the festival they really gave us quite a show to remember, and as I said, I was glad I was there to witness it.
