Fvnerals

Alice, Vanløse - 2024

When Bell Witch came round Denmark on their The Clandestine Gate tour, they had brought a supporting band with them that was completely new to me. Fvnerals was the name, and their origin is in the UK, even though they apparently reside in Leipzig, Germany now, and their vocalist/bassist Tiffany Ström is a Swede, and guitarist Syd Scarlet, I’m informed, comes from Belgium.

Regardless of where they’ve come from however, we can all agree that they currently rest very firmly in Doomtown with the music they’re making, and their performance mirrored this on Alice’s stage this night.
Without a word they walked on stage, no intro music to pull us in, and only the low hum and buzz of the instruments as they were made ready - and off we were into the first song of the evening, Ashen Era. Now, the setlist is presented here to the best of my knowledge from research and with a vague memory of how the songs sounded, since there was no setlist on stage to look at, nor did the band introduce any of the songs except for the finale, Where, which was played solely by Ström on vocals (she had put her bass away) and Scarlet on guitar. The band’s drummer (I’m not sure if it was Thomas Vaccargiu playing with them this evening or not) had walked off the stage without a word at the end of Crown, and the other two walked off in a similar manner after Where, ending the show in much the same way as they opened it.

Between the opening and the ending, Ström had said a short “Hi” after Ashen Era, and a “Our final song is Where” after Crown, and that was it for audience interaction. Even so, Fvnerals delivered a nicely moody and atmospheric performance, where Scarlet highly accentuated his chords by following them through with his entire body, where the other two were much calmer in their expression.
There was no lightshow to speak of, but there was a movie screen as a backdrop, on which there was a moody black and white video production running throughout the set. It wasn’t a video as such, but rather different images set together to follow the atmosphere of the music. All in all, it made for a good impression.

As mentioned, Fvnerals was new to me, but I found them to be the perfect opener for this doom-laden evening, and I quite enjoyed their performance, as well as listening a bit more to their music after the show.
