Doro
Wacken - 2009
Text: Tobias Nilsson Photo: Lunah Lauridsen
There are more and more bands that make it big with a woman fronting them; Nightwish, Arch Enemy and Lacuna Coil are but a few.
In my mind, however, they all have to bow down in the dust before the one and only Queen of Metal; Doro Pesch!
Even though she by date of birth may outrank the others (I know it’s not nice to talk about a woman’s age), she still packs more power and intensity in that tight leather outfit of hers, than any of the other could ever dream of attaining.
It came as quite a surprise to me that Miss Pesch chose to open with not only one, but three of her most famous songs from the Warlock era; I would have thought they would have been dispersed a bit more evenly through the night. The unlikely opener was the beautiful Für Immer, and as the stage was alight with candles the atmosphere was absolute.
After this, she quickly moved over to the much harder area of the set with I Rule The Ruins and Burning The Witches.
Were there any more classics we could hope for later on then?
Of course there was; as the ending drew near Doro first gave us her interpretation of Judas Priests’ Breaking The Law, quickly following up on the momentum with her own megahit All We Are.
Doro is also known as one to take guest appearances in to augment her show, and this night was no exception. In the song Celebrate she was joined by Sabina Classen (Holy Moses) centre stage, as they both paid their tribute to the music we all love and owe so much.
As usual, Doro and her band were full of energy, and they gave an outstanding show in front of the large audience which had assembled just for this.
Setlist:
Für Immer (Warlock cover)
I Rule The Ruins (Warlock cover)
Burning The Witches (Warlock cover)
True As Steel
The Night Of The Warlock
Fight
Above The Ashes
Burn It Up
Celebrate
Breaking The Law (Judas Priest cover)
All We Are (Warlock cover)
