Disneyland After Dark

Wacken - 2009

Being one of the ”nicest” bands to play Wacken, I was impressed at how large the crowd before the Party Stage was when Disneyland After Dark started their concert.
Actually, the general number of visitors at the festival grounds prevented us from seeing the start of the show sadly.

As we have become accustomed to, the crazy Danes gave an excellent performance; the sound was good, the costumes were extravagant and best of all, the atmosphere was just perfect!
Jesper Binzer aced it as the seasoned frontman he is, leading us on an intense rock journey, at times serious and at even more times humorous. At several times he ventured out in speaking German between songs, which seemed to please the local fans a lot; although, as I’m no expert myself, I can’t say how good he was at it.
The rest of the band was also well up to the task of entertaining, but I expect Stig Pedersen must have worked up quite a sweat in his latex-suit, what with all the fire and sparklers used in the show. By the way, thank you for inventing the reversed designed bass, I love that one!

The set was concentrated around the heavier, more uptempo songs D:A:D have made (probably to go with the setting), and well mixed without putting weight on any specific period of the bands back-catalogue.
I myself always enjoy hearing songs from the Helpyourselfish album, although I think it is time to give some other songs than Reconstrucdead a chance, like Blood In/Out or It’swhenit’swrongit’sright for example…
The crowd favourites were probably Bad Craziness and the finale song Sleeping My Day Away, at least these were the ones with the loudest and longest audience sing-alongs.
The latter was introduced with Jesper pretending that his microphone was a cell phone, and that the leader of Wacken called him to say that they weren’t allowed to go off before they played that certain song.

I had a blast at the show; this was a perfect way to start this years’ Wacken Open Air. I just wish I had seen it from the start...
