Grøn Koncert, Valby - 2022

“Please welcome the kings of rock’n’roll!”, was the way the announcers presented D-A-D to the Grøn Koncert audience, and within Denmark at least, that’s a title well deserved.
They’ve been around for 40 years (depending on what you count as their true beginning), and they consistently put out new music and tour every corner of the country.
They’re highly popular in our neighbouring countries as well, but for this review, it is the domestic crowd they mainly cater to.

“God damnit Valby, you look good and you smell deliciously!”
- Jesper Binzer (vocals/guitar)

Once the announcement was over, D-A-D burst onto the stage, and showed a great deal of energy from the get-go. We knew the opening track from having watched them at the first Grøn Koncert show a bit over a week ago, the classic Isn’t That Wild, a real banger in it’s own right, but it seemed - funnily enough - that the time on the road had done wonders for the band, as they delivered it with much more conviction and gusto for us here at the final Grøn Koncert show of the year.
In fact, D-A-D seemed determined to burn off all leftover fuel they might have lying around, and so they kept on full steam, and delivered a tight and rockin’ show from start to finish. Personal favourites once again included Written In Water, Everything Glows, and the enormous party that Sleeping My Day Away creates - but honestly, everything was delicious here.

“So this is where I’m supposed to say something intelligent..? I hope for world peace!”
- Stig ‘Stigge’ Pedersen (bass/vocals)

It was an impressive crowd that had come out for D-A-D, and things were rapidly becoming packed at the festival. The band was sett to play, and did start playing, at 18.00 o’clock, and by this time, the audience had had time to show up first of all, but also get over that initial stress that entails in standing in long lines; they were getting settled, had had a few drinks I’m sure, and were feeling good. This much was apparent, in that hardly without any effort, Jesper Binzer got his crowd to clap along already in the first song, and things got louder and more physical as the show progressed. The jokes were well received, and the songs even more so.
However, it also became apparent that this was a diverse festival crowd, and not altogether one that came out for D-A-D in particular, meaning that towards the end of the show, quite sizeable parts of the crowd had begun to wander off, most likely to get ready for the next show at the other stage. D-A-D still had a good crowd until they finished, and there were definitely enough to lift the Sleeping My Day Away sing-along, but there was also suddenly plenty of elbow room to move about in.

After having the feeling of ‘another day at the office’ fresh in mind from that first Grøn Koncert gig, I was very pleasantly surprised by how much momentum the band had managed to gather on tour. Apparently some old work horses just need to have the dust brushed off their shoulders to work, and it had certainly done D-A-D well to be out and about for a while. Living on stage with an audience in front of them is now scientifically proven to be the optimal state of this rock’n’roll unit.
