Destruction
The Rock, Copenhagen - 2008
Text: Tobias Nilsson Photo: Lunah Lauridsen
My first thought as Destruction was about to hit the stage was; where did all these people come from?
Now, truth be told, I think The Rock was still less than half filled, but there were still several times more people now than there had been for Debauchery who supported them! I still accredit the generally low attendance to the fact that Motörhead was also playing in Copenhagen the same day.
But there was no way that we here at Metalmoments would pass up a chance of seeing Destruction in our hometown for them.
Starting the show of with some Mambo Kurt reminiscent music set the tone; this was a true German night!
The stage was set, not with the large amount of pyro we are used to seeing them with at larger places, but still with the broken skull logo on the sides and in the background and Marcel 'Schmier' Schirmer's now familiar skull and flames microphone stands placed around the stage.
And on came the band, spirit high and in a formidable mood, ready to send some fast-beating German thrash our way. This was, after all, their 25th anniversary tour so of course they were ready give it all they had and that we could take.
Therefore I find it understandable that it must have felt a bit weird for the band that so many of the assembled crowd chose to hang out on the balcony instead of filling out the many empty places on the floor.
As Schmier himself put it;"Is that the smoking area? What, you'd rather smoke than listen to metal!?"
This was not the only comment he had to give to the audience either; there was a very drunk guy in the front always yelling and throwing himself halfway up on the stage so finally he was given hold of the mic for a short while after which Schmier said;"You done now? Then shut the fuck up when I'm talking!"
Now, don't go misreading this as he was in a bad mood or something; all he said and did was always delivered with a big smile on his lips.
As for the rest of the band, Mike Sifringer and Marc Reign, they were also really happy to be out playing, or so it looked to me at least.
Mike was smiling basically all the time and could at several times be seen talking shortly to the people in the front, and even though Destruction had a long and well-filled setlist written down for the evening there was still time for Marc to give a lethal drum-solo amidst all the musical carnage.
Even though The Rock has definitely seen larger amounts of people gathered at earlier times, it has for sure also seen lazier audiences than the one present tonight. There was a lot of drinking (as it should be) and a wild mosh was present centre floor throughout the whole concert.
And I, I simply had a great time.
