Deftones
Copenhell - 2018

The day had been rather brutal so far, so it was time to dial it back a bit, and to help us do that, Deftones came with their smooth, sweet cool.
“We were here at the very first Copenhell ever! Eight years later and we’re back, so thanks for having us!”
- Chino Moreno (vocals/guitar)
Deftones didn’t exactly open in a calm way however, as they kicked the dust up with Headup from their sophomore album Around The Fur. On the album, Max Cavalera holds co. vocal duties with Moreno, so it was a bit sad that Soulfly had played here the day before, otherwise we might have seen a nice guest appearance here. Oh well.
Moreno did good on his own though, both with his voice, and also with the guitar he donned once in a while.
I have a strong nostalgic like for Deftones, so opening the show with no less than three tracks in a row from Around The Fur sat very well with me, and later we were in for a slew of White Pony material as well. Coming full circle, the encore consisted of two Adrenaline tracks, so my inner young fanboy had little to complain about in that area.
The performance was laid back and comfortable for the most part. Moreno was the one standing out here, in more ways than one. For instance, he didn’t mind getting into the security pit, and lend his mic to the fans in the front line, something that was obviously much appreciated. The rest of the band played well enough, but didn’t leave as much of a mark on the overall performance.
Still the Copenhagen crowd was indeed happy to see the band back, and were partying hard through the concert. Finally, the masses had begun to assemble, and the morning hangover was duly shaken out in the pit.
Deftones did create a nice and cozy atmosphere on stage. The band seemed to enjoy themselves, and they got a good response from the crowd. It was good for what it was, and I’m glad I watched it, but it’s not a show that’ll be particularly remembered down the ages.
