Bullet
KB, Malmö - 2011
Text: Tobias Nilsson Photo: Lunah Lauridsen
After Dolly Daggers had left with their mannequins, and police lights had been placed on top of the speaker rack and a wooden sign saying Highway Pirates had been placed next to the drums, there really was only one way to go.
Engines roared, sirens wailed, lights were blinking, and Bullet came on fast and hard with the title track off their latest release which name was now painted on the sign (same sign as on the album-cover I’m sure).
Suddenly I found myself surrounded people, where there earlier in the night (during the support band to be precise) had been nothing but air. What happened one could ask oneself, but there was no time for such an inner brain discussion as the band was rapidly tearing the roof off of the building with their high octane, fully loaded heavy metal!
I was not familiar with any of the new material before coming here tonight, but as it turned out it didn’t matter one bit. The new songs, as far as I heard them was very much just a continuation of what Bullet has done in the past, and before I knew it I was gladly and loudly singing along to “scream and shout, let it out!” in Back On The Road. And I was not the only one, that’s for sure! Actually, that short sentence pretty much sums up the entire thing, and all over KB the easy to follow message could be heard, from man and woman, old and young alike.
This was one well executed show, and that it had been thought out beforehand was not to be mistaken. These guys may look like a bunch of boozers from the mid 80ies who have just been picked up at the local metal-pub and thrown up on a stage, but don’t be fooled; the members of Bullet are professionals who know exactly what they’re doing.
But are they doing it because they have laid some cold and calculated plan? No, they are doing because they bleedin’ like it, and that’s the way it’s supposed to be done!
Sure, they are a bunch of posers of God’s given grace, but who the hell cares when they by a simple guitar solo behind the neck can get your heart pumping that extra amount of alcohol around your system, and then they double it up by having both Erik Almström AND Hampus Klang put their six-strings behind their heads in unity! Pure metal bliss, I tell you.
These two weren’t the only ones having fun on stage though; Adam Hector got people to put their hands together as an intro for Roadking, a song which they later paused midway for him to introduce the band while the rest of them were jamming in the background. After a finishing “Cheers!” directed at the audience, they picked up where they left off and nailed the end of the song.
So, where does that leave us? Well, we were at KB, one of my favoured concert halls, we had a loud and sweaty audience, and finally one of Sweden’s top acts in active metal. You guessed it, it was absolutely amazing!
Oh, and I almost forgot; at the very end, Klang reached down and put a plectre directly into the palm of my hand. Instant fanboy? Yes I am!
