Body Count

Copenhell - 2024

Nearly a decade and nearly three albums later, Body Count was back at Copenhell, ready to talk shit and take shots again.

“Danish people, stand up for your new national anthem!”
- Ice-T (vocals)

Last time they were here was my first time seeing them live, and I liked it. At that time I was speculating whether it would be a one-off thing or something more permanent, and I guess I had my answer right here, shouting at me (and everyone else) from the stage.
The show opened with the intro from Civil War from the Bloodlust album, but then quickly changed over to Body Count’s In The House from the self-titled debut, which I guess is the best possible way to introduce the band.
Body Count was of course off to the races from the start, and while it was hard (standing a little out to the side) to see drummer Ill Will, the rest of the band delivered well enough, that’s for sure. Especially bassist Vincent Price and backing vocalist/hype man Little Ice (yes, it’s Ice-T’s son) impressed with their energetic delivery, and Little ice was seen all over - not just the stage, but out on the speakers, down in the security pit; hell, he was even crowdsurfing the moshpit during Cop Killer, and that’s freaking dedication to delivery!

Body Count gave us mainly songs from the debut, but apart from that there was a good mix of tracks from their career, some covers, and even some songs from their upcoming album, Merciless. Remember how I said nearly three albums up top? That’s what I was referring to, and we got to pre-listen to Purge (based on the film franchise) and Psychopath. During the latter, Ice-T performed with a stocking over his face, and when the song was over and he took the stocking off again, he appeared dazed and confused, blurting out “What happened? I had a short black out. Where did all this blood come from?”
Ice-T was talking quite a lot between songs actually, and while some of it was fun, like the comment above, he also commented towards the end that he was too old and lazy to leave for an encore, so he’d just turn his back and pretend. Now, that was cool enough, cause we’re honestly too old for the whole leave the stage shenanigans as well, and just want the band to continue playing, but the ‘too old’ part showed up in less sympathetic ways as well, closer to the ‘old man yells at cloud’ style, where Ice-T several times bemoaned the weakness of the younger generations, going out of his way to say what pussies and bitches they all are (his words, not mine), and that got a bit too much in the end.

Luckily, the music didn’t go down that same road, and it still kicked ass all over. Delivering a Slayer cover on the same festival where Kerry King played with his solo band, and ending up delivering the songs more convincingly and with more energy is damned cool, and it was nice to see Body Count bring in a couple of guest vocalists for some of the tracks as well. The first one I’m not sure who was as he was wearing a mask on stage, although it could have been Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed) I guess, as they’ve worked together a lot in the past, and Hatebreed had played just before Body Count on the adjacent stage.
The other one there was no doubt about however, as it was Ice-T’s daughter! She was brought on for Talk Shit, Get Shot, where she got to sing along to the chorus. When the show was over and done with, she came back to the stage and did a mic drop ending, while Little Ice was back in the security pit, handing out setlists.

Shit talking aside, Body Count delivered a lively and energetic show that went straight to the pit of the Danish fans. There was a lot of partying, moshing, and crowd surfing. A massive wall of death for Purge, and an even bigger circle pit for the The Exploited cover mash-up. This was hot, sweaty, and a hell of a lot of fun!
