Behemoth

Metaldays - 2015

The ghost hour had arrived, and with it the final act to grace the main stage of Metaldays anno 2015. Yes, ladies and gentleghouls, Behemoth was here…

“Scream for me Metaldays! Scream for me Slovenia!”
- Adam ‘Nergal’ Darski (vocals/guitar)

Behemoth started out in their now recognisable, but still effective, manner, with Tomasz ‘Orion’ Wróblewski standing on one side of the drums and Zbigniew ‘Inferno’ Promiński, and on the other side stood Patryk ‘Seth’ Sztyber. When they were in position, Nergal arrived, bearing torches which he used to light fire plates on the stage.
When this ritual was done, the band opened with the droning but powerful Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel, smoke cannons in front of the stage delivered their payload, and the masses shouted and raised their devil horns high in the air – the final black mass was in session.
By now, Behemoth’s show was beginning to look rehearsed. If you’ve seen them live as much as once in recent years, you’ll know pretty much everything that’s going to happen, and when. When Behemoth holds mass, there is little space for improvisation, and yet this studied ritual manages to work its dark wonder upon us every time. The flame cannons go off at the right time, Orion and Seth work in unison as inverted crosses are lit on fire, and when the set makes a stop, you know the band will return with their Satan masks on for that one final chant, which concludes this wicked gathering.

“Slovenia, we’ve fucking missed you!”
- Nergal (vocals/guitar)

But, you know what? So what if this is rehearsed down to the smallest detail? At least Behemoth has thought about what they want to deliver, and they do deliver! Just ask any one of the Metaldays people gathered here, there were enough of them to choose from! Maybe even all. I’m sure they’ll tell you this was one devil-worshipping ritual of a show they wouldn’t miss for the end of the world.
That’s what their response to the concert told me at least. From the shouts and raised horns, through the screamed lyrics, to the incessant crowd-surfing. Heck, I even saw someone sail by, cradling a lit graveyard candle in their hands!
All the way through the show, Behemoth worked hard to keep the masses awake and alive at the late hour, and they got so much in return from the Metaldays crowd. After the last notes of O Father O Satan O Sun! had rung out, everyone could agree that Behemoth had closed down Metaldays 2015 in style.

Despite minor annoyances, like the predictability I’ve already touched on, and the fact that Seth smoked throughout the final song and thus killed the mood ever so slightly, I can gladly say that Behemoth delivered yet another trademark concert, consistent and effective.
