Apocalyptica
Graspop Metal Meeting - 2008
Text: Tobias Nilsson Photo: Lunah Lauridsen
Under a scorching Belgian sun, Apocalyptica made a strong start with Refuse/Resist.
Sadly, as with most other bands playing the Main stage, the sound was far from perfect; the drums nearly drowned out all the cellos.
Enough of the negative comments though. There is absolutely nothing, not even a less than perfect sound, which can bring a show from Apocalyptica down in my eyes. And there were quite a few others who shared this sentiment; I don't think the place had been this full before except maybe for the headliners.
As usual, Apocalyptica delivered a show which disappointed no one, and the singing along with the cover tracks and clapping extended far down past the sound tower, something you definitely don't see with every band.
Apocalyptica also tried to appeal to the German fans in the audience in particular, saying that since they play such great football the band would play their next song completely in German. The song was Helden, and yes, it was the instrumental version.
"Here's a little love song from the north of Finland" Eicca Toppinen exclaimed a little later, and everyone was treated to the beautiful Bittersweet. Later, they ended the fantastic show with Hall Of The Mountain King.
This was definitely one of the best shows counting all the three festivals we visited on this trip.
There were just two songs which I didn't catch the title of, but I think they were Worlds Collide and Harmageddon. Not sure, though.
Setlist (incomplete):
Refuse/Resist (Sepultura cover)
Fight Fire With Fire (Metallica cover)
Helden (David Bowie cover)
Betrayal
Bittersweet
Last Hope
Seek & Destroy (Metallica cover)
Enter Sandman (Metallica cover)
Hall Of The Mountain King (Edvard Grieg cover)
