”I can tell we have some old Anvil fans here, I can see the bald heads!”
- Steve 'Lips' Kudlow (vocals/guitar)
As I mentioned in my last review of the band, old-school trashheads Anvil seems to have gained a lot in popularity since the self-titled rockumentary of the band was released, and even though they were playing the Dio Stage this year I could still tell that they had a good following in the very large audience filling up the grounds and the hill. Just looking at all the arms that were raised as Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow asked how many had been in the film (part of the film showed Anvil at Sweden Rock Festival 2006) told me that they weren’t new people just coming round for a quick look, as can happen many times at a festival.
Anvil’s music has still to completely bow me of my feet, but I like the live-shows, as they show just how much the band loves to do this stuff. It’s impossible not to see how much fun they have on stage, and how fired up they get as the audience respond to the energy that is sent flying through the speakers.
Robb Reiner really pounded away at those drums, and ‘new boy’ on the bass Glenn ‘G5’ Gyorffy had all his moves and facial expressions going. Lips himself was up to several of his antics as well, among others the classic when he plays his guitar with a dildo.
I wasn’t overly enthusiastic about the show, mainly due to not connecting with the music, but if you’re looking for some solid entertainment, few bands make an effort the Anvil does.
