As the last of the 15 minute bands, we got to see an old-school act which I’ve never seen or heard before, I must admit.
Ok, I think there have been more people than me in that situation, but after the release of the rockumentary film “Anvil! The Story Of Anvil”, the Canadian band has been put back on the map of metal, as was apparent tonight as many in the audience seemed to be looking very much forward to this show.
For those of you who still don’t know them, I would describe Anvil as a technical thrash band who emerged early in the eighties (although starting out much earlier than that), and have kept on playing since.
This night they started out with an instrumental track, which let leadsinger/guitarist Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow show of his skills, and he did so to the delight of many.
What didn’t work for me was when he started singing in the second song; I just couldn’t fit the voice and the music together.
For the third and last song, Metal On Metal, Anvil brought a guest musician on stage. The guest was none other than Scott Ian of Anthrax, who has cited Anvil as one of his big inspirations. Together they brought the show to a new level, and the gig was ended with Kudlow screaming his thanks into the guitars pickup.
Anvil later moved on to win the Metal As Fuck award.
Although relatively popular, Anvil was still the musical low-point for me (ok, so they had some tough competition as well). I thought the music sounded alright, but the clash between voice and music kept nagging on me, and therefore brought the overall feeling for the concert down.
