Anaal Nathrakh

Brutal Assault - 2009

The last day of Brutal Assault held a line-up which really lived up to the festivals name; black metal was replaced by old-school death, which in turn gave way speedy grindcore.
The next band up hailed from the latter genre, they were called Anaal Nathrakh and for the first time ever they left the confines of the British Isles to lay down some breakneck tunes over a Czech audience.

To this reporter, V.I.T.R.I.O.L. (vocals, a.k.a. Dave Hunt), Mick ‘Migg’ Kenney (all the rest (this day guitars though)) and the group of live helpers they had collected all looked like the kind of guys where the neighbours always say “He was always such a quiet boy”, after finding out he hung their daughter up with meathooks in the backyard tree while eating the intestines of their old dog. Deceivably common and kind that is, but carrying something dark and vile inside.
This was all let out over the crowd, who by this time were awake enough, and possibly drunk as well, to appreciate it. In fact, the assembled mass of people were so wild V.I.T.R.I.O.L. stopped up several times between songs to humbly say thanks to all who had met up and made their day that much better.

Speed was the common factor here, as with all grindcore, and for connoisseurs of the genre, I am sure this was something of a gem. It didn’t do it for me, but that’s probably personal preferences rearing its ugly head here...
