The Crusher, Zeche, Bochum - 2008

Right about now it just feels like I'm repeating myself. How can anyone reading this believe me when I say it just keeps getting more crowded and more intense for every passing night?
Actually, this night started out a bit slow compared to the other two. At least if you were looking at the crowd.
Once again I had placed myself under the watchful gaze of the metal-cast Grim Reaper, a pretty cool statue hey have here at Zeche.
From there I could see almost everything going on in the crowd (which at this point was not much) as well as maintaining a perfect view of the stage, a much livelier place.
The laziness of the crowd began wearing of already at the start of Masters Of War though, so I suspect they just needed a little warm-up time. As Johan started up a yell-along with "Hey" during that very same song all horns could be seen raised and from the loudness of the hall there was no mistaking the power of the German (and Italian, Swizz, Australian and all other nationalities gathered here) Vikings was still intact.
"This is the most intense night so far, because this is The Crusher night!"
- Johan Hegg (vocals)
This is what the frontman said, and soon after it became a self-fulfilling prophecy as the headbanging and the moshing started. Especially A Fury Divine saw a very big moshpit starting up, and several of the newer songs again saw a lot of action as well. The number of crowd surfers had definitely peaked on the first night though, with only a small handful of people going over the fence today. This is something I can't really explain as the guards present did not seem to mind this activity that much and were helpful enough to ship people back into the crowd again.
Few things seem to change as a whole, but there are smaller differences which helps keeping the shows separate.
For instance, this night there was far less speaking in between songs. This was possibly due to the fact that there were a few more songs to go through tonight compared to the other nights as The Crusher is, up till that point in time, the album with the most tracks on, only surpassed by their latest release Twilight Of The Thunder God. And this is of course not counting the bonus track Eyes Of Horror, their Possessed cover which they also left out of their set.
Another change was quite surprisingly that they left out their famous toast with the drinking horns. No matter how short the time they might have, this was something I would definitely not have guessed they would pass up on.
A thing that would have been nice to see a difference in however was the sound. Actually, I think it was marginally better at this concert than the other before, but maybe it is just me getting more accustomed to it. It was however not a good thing as Olavi Mikkonen's guitar was completely lost at the start of As Long As The Raven Flies. Luckily, it came back in time to hear the imported Icelandic folk-melody used at the end of the song; which I'm told by Fredrik Andersson they have from the quite excellent old Viking film Korpen Flyger (this is the Swedish title which would translate The Raven Flies, although I have been unable to find an English title so I can't say for sure that this is what it is called...)
"Tomorrow's a special night right? Cause it is Versus The World night! We've also heard that it is New Years Eve or something, but that is secondary."
- Hegg (vocals)
I must say I like Hegg's way of prioritising, and we are definitely looking forward to it as well, with both joy and sadness in our hearts.
For sure, it will be the most intense party of all the nights here, but it also marks the end of this amazing journey, and I daresay it will never get better than this. It truly is a once in a life-time experience.
